Great Migrations

Great Migration

Great Migration

Experiencing a migration of any species is really remarkable.  The National Geographic Channel is starting a series in November called the “Great Migrations“.

I was privileged to experience the beginning of the Wildebeest Migration from the Serengeti into Tanzania.  Watching a herd of over 100 animals running through the bush in order to catch up to the main herd was truly remarkable.

Even if you don’t have the National Geographic Channel, you  can view the website as it offers a wealth of information especially the 3D Migration Globe.  I viewed the migration of the Red Crab and leaned about it’s migration to the sea in order to give birth.  Here in California we have a migration of the monarch butterfly that starts happening in late November when they arrive to spend the winter at Ardenwood Farm in Fremont.  This year I will be on hand during the their stay to photograph this event and post the photos here for those who can’t be present to witness it for themselves.

I will also be writing an article on the examimer.com about this event along with other topics.

Claude turns 15 at the California Academy of Science

Claude

Claude turns 15

Everyone that visits the California Academy of Science in San Francisco has a rare treat in store.  Claude is one of a very few Albino Alligators that are in captivity.  To my understanding there are none in the wild.  I took this picture of Claude on my last visit to the Academy and am planning on going back very soon.  Check out Claude’s birthday party as filmed by KTVU along with the California Academy of Science website.

For those who have never visited the Academy you have really missed a special day with the family.  Everyone enjoys the; planetarium, aquarium,  rain forest, African exhibit and much much more.

Visiting the Galapagos

Galapagos Seals by Sandy Moniz

Galapagos Seals by Sandy Moniz

I watched the Galapagos Webinar and found it very interesting even though it appeared to end up being a sales pitch.  The photography was great along with the amount of information that they disseminated.   I visited the Galapagos and found it to be an incredible experience that I would do over in a minute.

The photo was taken while visiting one of the islands.

Aquariums – My Favorite Topic

Epcot Center, Living Sea ©Sandy Moniz 2010

I love to visit aquariums no matter what size they are.  I had the opportunity to dive the Living Sea while at Epcot Center.  What an experience for a diver to be in a really large aquarium with so many aquatic animals.  Coming nose to nose with a small shark was truly an experience.  I took this photo from the viewers area just prior to my dive.

I just finished up my series of articles on aquariums and they can be found on Examiner.com.

Celebrate Salmon Month at the Aquarium of the Bay

During a recent visit to the Aquarium of the Bay, I discovered that September is Salmon Month.  The aquarium will have many exhibits and events that will showcase salmon.  For more information, Aquarium of the Bay or Salmon Aid.

Full Moon

With camera ready, I will attempt to catch tonight’s moon.  Here are a couple of places to visit that talk about the full moon.  http://yhoo.it/avKS8Z who is saying that it’s not a full moon and the folks at moon phases who give times based on GMT.  I did shoot a full moon sometime ago and wrote some quick tips on how to photograph such an occurrence, the article is posted on Examiner.com

Commercial Travel Maybe Changing

Commercial travel for not only photographers but anyone who can afford the price maybe changing in the future.  The “Friendly Skies” may refer to space travel.  The Discovery Channel has an article posted on line – http://bit.ly/cNIzUx.    I will have to see what Mars has going before booking this trip.   I’m wondering if Mars will be like visiting the set of “Total Recall.”
